Life on the Farm: ALA-Austin and the Urban Roots Experience |
Urban Roots hires 24 "farm interns" from local high schools each year to work on a 3.5 acre urban farm during the spring and summer. They donate 40% of their produce to hunger relief organizations and sell 60% at farmers' markets and farm stands in Austin. In the process, the interns learn leadership and managements skills as well as sustainable food production, distribution and marketing.
On this day, the ALA crew harvested plums, tomatoes, cucumbers, leeks and onions – and pulled a few weeds, too. Our shoes and clothes may have been muddy, but our sprits were high! The weather even cooperated – a little cloud cover and a few summer breezes made all the difference. We were well managed by the Urban Roots interns who demonstrated much patience and great leadership skills in keeping us on track.
Thank you to all of our members who volunteered and especially to our business partners who pitched in with such great attitudes and good humor. They made the day even more enjoyable.
